The Cedar Island Stables owners have over 15 years of horse experience. All of the guides are experienced horsemen and women who pride themselves on horse and rider safety. Safety of our guests is our number one priority!

Our horses are well seasoned and will be matched to your riding ability. All skill levels can make this ride with little effort. Our horses are like family and are well taken care of. We feed them quality hay and grain and they have access to fresh water 24/7. We typically ride in the mornings and in the evenings because those are the coolest parts of the day and the horses are resting during the other parts of the day. After rides our horses are brushed and if it is hot they are hosed down to help them cool and to remove the salt and sand from the beach.

About the Rides:

Watching the wild horses graze

One Hour Rides:

Your ride will start at the Cedar Island Stables barn and head directly to Cedar Island Beach where you will travel over one and a half miles of pristine beaches of the Pamlico Sound. The Outer Banks Wild Spanish Horses are currently a herd of over 50 horses with a dozen new born foles who are often roaming along the shoreline or in the trees of Cedar Island. The wild horses roam from Cedar Island to Ship Shoal Island, Hog Island and beyond every day. Free range cattle roam the islands as well and could be a part of your tour. Several bird species, occasional dolphin sightings and river otters may make an appearance as well, but the beach ride alone is absolutely beautiful no matter what you see. There are no houses anywhere on the beach and you are at one with nature. When you reach the end of Cedar Island you will return back to the barn and cut over and around the dunes on your way back.

Crossing from Cedar Island to Ship Shoal Island

One & One Half Hour Rides:

The 90 minute ride is our most popular tour which will also start at the Cedar Island Stables barn and head directly to Cedar Island Beach where you will travel over one and a half miles of pristine beaches of the Pamlico Sound. Next you will cross over the large inlet that separates the Cedar Island Bay from the Pamlico Sound crossing over approximately 1000 feet of water on your horse. Your feet may get wet and you may get a few splashes here and there but it is a once in a lifetime view from the water you will never forget. Next you will travel through the untouched Ship Shoal Island continuing the search for multiple herds of the Outer Banks Wild Spanish Horses are currently a herd of over 50 horses with a dozen new born foles who are often roaming along the shoreline or in the trees of our Islands. The wild horses roam from Cedar Island to Ship Shoal Island, Hog Island and beyond every day. Free range cattle roam the islands as well and could be a part of your tour. Several bird species, occasional dolphin sightings and river otters may make an appearance as well, but the beach and water crossing ride is absolutely beautiful no matter what you see. You will return back to the barn crossing over the water again and roaming through the Dunes of Cedar Island. You will never forget this day!
